Master Your Core: The Pelvic Floor Connection!

Are you aware of the powerful role your pelvic floor (PF) plays in your overall well-being? Understanding and connecting with your PF is crucial for everyone—yes, that means you too!

I once had a client jokingly tell me that he didn’t have those muscles, believing they were only for pregnant women. While he meant it as a joke, it highlights just how little we discuss this important area—and that’s a disservice to both women and men.

Why Pelvic Floor Health Matters

Ladies, let's talk first. We experience hormonal fluctuations that can significantly impact our PF. During pregnancy, the increased load and changes in posture put extra pressure on the PF, which can lead to various issues. After giving birth and during menopause, our estrogen levels drop. Estrogen keeps our PF tissues thick and healthy, and without it, they can become lax. Conversely, if you’ve had a C-section or often clench your jaw (a hint at next month's topic!), your PF muscles might be tighter, potentially leading to muscle pain and even incontinence. Yes, it’s a misconception that only a “loose” PF can cause incontinence.

Now, gentlemen, it’s your turn. While incontinence is often associated with women, it’s a topic that deserves your attention too. Did you know that your PF health can also affect your bowel movements as you age? Understanding the PF is just as important for you as it is for women.

The Universal Impact of Pelvic Floor Health

For both genders, PF health influences various aspects of life, including the risk of hernias and back pain. Our posture, daily movement patterns, athletic activities, and more all play a role in PF health. Just like any other muscle, the PF can be tight, loose, or imbalanced (with one side being tighter than the other). This is why we love incorporating 360-degree breathing into our routines—it helps us understand what's going on down there and what we need to focus on.

Show Your Pelvic Floor Some Love!

Our PF muscles may be small, but they play a big role in our daily lives. It’s time to start paying more attention to these intricate muscles and show them the love and support they deserve.
